Choose a quote from any book from summer reading and discuss how that quote relates to your life philosophy. You could choose a quote to disagree with as well. 3 sentences.

  1. My life quote is,"So some symbols do have a relatively limited range of meanings, but in general, a symbol can't be reduced to standing for only one thing. If they can, it's not symbolism, it's allegory." (How to Read Literature Like a Professor Page 98)
Everything happens for a reason. Even when I have been in the darkest times of life, I still see reasons why those things must have occurred in order for me to get better throughout my life's walk. Symbolism doesn't just have a role in literature. It also has an effect on everyone's life.

  2. “He discovers he has something in common with this stranger – eating as a fundamental element of life – that there is a bond between them.” pg.10

I believe that everyone is connected on some level to one another. Whether they admit it or not is irrelevant, because no matter how we look or act on the outside, we are all just people on the inside. We are all the same at the very core of our existence.

  4. "I knew you would do me good in some way, at some time; - I saw it in your eyes when I first beheld you: their expression and smile did not - did not strike delight to my very inmost heart so for nothing. People talk of natural sympathies: I have heard of good genii: - there are grains of truth in the wildest fable. My cherished preserver, good-night!"
    -Mr. Rochester.

This does not relate to my life philosophy in the way that this is the first time that Rochester shows emotion towards Jane and not sarcasm or cynicism. I disagree with his methods of dealing with people, as he is rather abrasive. He eventually goes on to respect Jane as an equal, which he should have done from the start.

  5. "Suffering has been stronger than all other teaching, and has taught me to understand what your heart used to be. I have been bent and broken, but - I hope - into a better shape." -Great Expectations
No matter how difficult things may seem in the moment I always look forward. It is important to know that in the future things always get better. The world is always changing and forever evolving.

  6. "In the little world in which children have their existence whosoever brings them up, there is nothing so finely perceived and so finely felt as injustice." I believe that children grow up to act how their parents or guardians raise them to be. If the parent treats them badly then the child will grow up knowing and expecting this injustice the rest of their lives. They will act how their parents acted as they grew up.

  7. ¨[...suffering has been stronger than all other teaching...]¨ (380)
My life philosophy states that the best way to learn is through failure. Everyone learns to walk as a toddler by falling. If one doesn't have mistakes, then one has nothing to learn from. Due to this, suffering and failure are the strongest forms of education.

  8. "No literary Christ figure can ever be as pure, as perfect, as divine as Jesus Christ." (page 67)

My life philosophy is the fact that no human, literary or real, could ever come as close to the perfection that Christ is, because it is simple: we are all human and all epic fails. For example, in The Crucible, John Proctor died the death of witch, when that sin was not apparent in him. Just like Christ, the difference is, Christ was sinless, while Proctor lived in sin (adultery). Which refers back to the quote by showing even a literary figure that is representing Christ could not come close to how Christ truly lived, His true life, and His perfection.

  10. "Damn you, Now i won't make one all night." (196). For me and for may people, the over-confidence of one's self can be the downfall when we just think about what and how we're doing that action. We all get confident with ourselves, but when we stop and think, it can change the entire situation. Some of us just act without thinking, yet all we have to do is take a few seconds out of our lives to just think.

  11. "Yea, woman, though sayest truly!" (14.18) cried old Roger Chillingworth.

He is a flat evil character that once loved with a warm heart now he is concurred by hate. Chillingworth is a man I disagree with because of his lack of happiness and morality. He only breeds the bad in people and I'd like to think I bring the positive energy out in others.

  12. "So what did you think the devil would look like?if he were red with a tail, horns and cloven hooves, any fool could say no" (page 2) This speaks to me on a deep level. Every one looks for the simplest answer and often miss what is really happening, they miss the devil looking for for the man with the little red man with horns.

  13. Everyone's life will always have its highs and lows, "rain mixes with sun to create rainbows" (74). Sometimes the situations that seem terrible can end up becoming a blessing in disguise. In my opinion everything happens for a reason and at times when you feel your life is falling apart it could be just on the verge of improvement. I believe this is true just as in order to see something beautiful in life like a rainbow, you have to go through the rain.

Charlotte Bronte writes in "Jane Eyre" in chapter 10, "I desired liberty, for liberty I gasped; for liberty I prayed..." I believe that in life, the most rewarding thing is to be free to find who you are, and to one day find the person you wanted to be. Jane just wanted wanted to learn and find who she was, and I wish to do that for myself.

  15. My life quote is,"You know more than you think you do." (How to Read Literature Like a Professor Page 249)
Life can be stressful at times and life can get kinda crazy. One thing I've had to learn is that I know more than I think and that I possess more skills than I think I do. Life is a journey and it will be bumpy sometimes but I am very prepared to take it on.

  16. "I've dreamt in my life dreams that have stayed strong with me ever after, and changed my ideas: they've gone through and through me, like wine through water, and altered the colour of my mind." (Wuthering Heights page 78) This quote applies to me because my dreams have helped shape who I am. They have changed me because I have based my goals off of them and let them guide me. I think this is good because it helps me set high expectations for myself to become a better person.

  17. "For what do we live, but to make sports of our neighbors, and laugh at them in our own turn?"
This quote is from "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen. My philosophy is to love others well. In this quote, Mr. Bennet is asking Lizzie Bennet this question. Instead of pointing out faults, building others up and loving them sets a better example!!!

  18. "Take nothing on its looks; take everything on evidence. There's no better rule." (pg 371 of Great Expectations) I try to live my life by this philosophy. You should not go through life judging the people you come in contact with simply based on their looks. Pip thought Magwich was nothing but a scary convict but he gave Magwich food anyway. Then he ended up giving Pip a large sum of money

  19. " . . . it [felt] very sorrowful and strange that this first night of my bright fortunes should be the loneliest I had ever known." This quote is from "Great Expectation" by Charles Dickens. The quotes fits me very well because every time I get a new skill in cheer-leading I feel it is worthless because there is always another skill that is better. This philosophy is a gift and a curse because it makes me a better person at everything I do, but I am never satisfied with my achievements. Sometimes my mom says i'm a perfectionist, but who listens to there mom.

  20. "It's really pretty straightforward: flight is freedom." (How to Read Literature Like a Professor Page 136) If you do not spread your wings, you can't fly. This basically means if you don't reach out and try new things, you'll never grow. That's why I like to do new things as I enjoy flying. I feel free when I can do lots and lots of things.

  21. My quote is "Happiness in marriage entirely a matter of chance", this is Charlotte Lucas talking to Elizabeth. I completely disagree with this statement. You can find love in marriage as long as you search for it. Saying that you cannot find love in marriage is just an excuse, so that you can settle.

  22. ¨It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." P&P

When I have a lot of money, I like spending it on girls. This is not a good philosophy but at least it makes another human happy instead of spending it on myself.

  23. "Take nothing on its looks; take everything on evidence. There's no better rule." (Great Expectations Pg. 371) My philosophy is to never jump to conclusions from what I see or hear. I try to find out for myself first. Pip judged Magwitch and he ended up helping Pip in his life more than the people he judged to be best for what he wanted out of life such as Miss Havisham

  24. "If you have a suspicion in your own breast, keep that suspicion in your own breast. It is not the least to the purpose what the reasons of this prohibition are; they may be the strongest and gravest reasons, or the may be mere whim. That is not for you to inquire to." (Great Expectations- Charles Dickens pg.139)
-This quote relates to my life philosophy because I believe that even if you hear things you think could be true, it's not alright to tell people about it. It could be a rumor that hurts someone, or it could be true. It's not anyone's place to talk about other people's business, good things don't come from it.

  25. "Where there is a real superiority of mind, pride will be always under good regulation." A quote from pride and prejudice. This applies to my life philosophy because I like superiority. It also applies because I have pride. This is a life philosophy because having superiority of mind is a way of life and resolves existential questions about pride.

  26. My life quote is, "The real reason for a quest is always self- knowledge." (p. 3 of How to Read Literature Like a Professor).
I have always loved traveling, because I get to see new places and learn new things about the places we live in. When someone travels, they usually find out new information about themselves and their personalities. For example, I received some self- knowledge when I was on tour with SouthWind Drum and Bugle Corps, it gave me insight on what it's like to live on my own, it also showed me what type of person I am. A trip's real reason is self- knowledge, just like the book tells us.

  27. "Were I in your place, I would frame high notions of my birth; and the thoughts of what I was should give me courage and dignity to support the oppressions of a little farmer!"
    (Wuthering Heights, pg. 44)

I believe that class and societies views, or thoughts, on class, do not matter. It doesn't matter if you're born into a family that lives under a bridge, or if you're born into a family that is as rich as Bill Gates. As long as you believe in yourself, try hard, or both, you can do anything that you want to do.

  28. "I wished Joe would had been rather more genteelly brought up, then I would have been so too." (Great Expectations page 66) This quote supports my philosophy that the way a child is raised determines how he/she acts as an adult. Parents and guardians show children how to behave in society. By following this behavior, children form their lifestyles from their parents.

  29. "Oh! you are a great deal too apt, you know, to like people in general. You never see a fault in anybody. All the world are good and agreeable in your eyes. I never heard you speak ill of a human being in your life."
    Pride and Prejudice (Ch. 4)
My philosophy is to be nice to everyone and not judge them based on appearance. It's not easy, and I'm not the best at it, but I believe this is one of the most important qualities a person can have. Love others.

  30. "Heaven knows we need never be ashamed of our tears, for they are rain upon the blinding dust of earth, overlying our hard hearts. I was better after I had cried, than before -- more sorry, more aware of my own ingratitude, more gentle." (153) This quote comes from Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations." My life philosophy is to try and be a grateful person and to show others how much they are valued. Even though some people do not understand that there are people who are grateful for them. Crying, although the thought of it makes some uncomfortable and awkward, helps other to realize that there is so much more in life.

  31. My quote is from Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre." "I long for a power of vision which might overpass that limit; which might reach the busy world , towns, regions full of life that I have heard of but never seen." (112) My life philosophy is to travel the country and world to help others and share the gospel with people. Jane longs to venture out of the walls of Thornfield hall just as I long to venture to help others worldwide. I want to be able to experience life I've heard of but never seen through the eyes of those who live it daily, and be able to relate to them on a personal level, no matter where they are from.

  32. From "Wuthering Heights," Emily Bronte wrote, "... but she had likewise dropped her fretful complaining, and we found it a great comfort." (pg. 109) My personal philosophy is to find the light in all situations. Others can be affected by one person's attitude, so I strive to be optimistic whatever the circumstance is and surround myself with other people who do the same. In the book, the characters are relieved of negativity when Mrs. Linton stopped complaining about her problems with her sister-in-law.

  33. In "How To Read Literature Like A Professor," Thomas Foster writes about how everything is a quest. "The quest consists of five things: (a) a quester, (b) a place to go, (c) a stated reason to go there, (d) challenges and trials en route, and (e) a real reason to go there." This shows that there are so many things in life that could be considered as a quest and not just the official 'quests'.
